<The Season of the Soul> is a series of works that began as color studies while working on the <Saturation of the Soul> series. Each piece is an outcome of mindfulness, creating a harmonious palette of colors reflecting the state of being at its time of creation. The soul, like earth, has seasons in which it bubbles with energy, lets go for the new, hibernates for rest, and sprouts new forms of being. The work followed the essence of the <Saturation of the Soul> series: the soul absorbing the colors of each life, and the stains saturating as a form of the soul with each lifetime.

Like other works in the "Cyclicality" series, horses visually represent unseen energy, in this case, the quivers of the soul. The circular representation of the horses symbolizes the cyclicality of life. Like other works in the “Cyclicality” series, the horses of the <Seasons of the Soul> series are in an eternal ring of what seems like reflection or continuous chase.

Horses are traditionally animals that symbolize “yang” energy in eastern philosophy. However, when noting the dynamic freedom of horses, there are notions of “yin” energy. “Yin” energy by definition is seen to be similar to “chaos”; yet “chaos”, despite its negative connotations, can also be defined as breaking free from fixed states and seeking change from the rigidity. In this sense, horses embody both "yin" and "yang".

In <Seasons of the Soul>, a single soul expresses the colors of the “self” as echoes of its surroundings. If <Saturation of the Soul> expresses the saturation of the soul as a harmony of colors, <Seasons of the Soul> captures the various sheens of the soul that change each moment in time. So why do we blame our hearts to be fickle when earth, too, changes its colors with time and its seasons? <Seasons of the Soul> is a series of works that embrace the everchanging form of the soul—how it evolves, then returns, then transitions again—the cyclicality of its journey. If one can embrace their everchanging soul, those transitions also become a part of the “self”. And that would be nature taking its course. <마음의 계절> 시리즈, 2024, 리넨에 유화, 40x30cm

 

<마음의 계절>은 <Saturation of the Soul> 시리즈를 작업하면서 컬러 스터디로 시작된 작품 시리즈이다. 특별한 계획이나 고정된 일정없이, 그때그때 마음을 들여다보며 마음과 손이 가는 대로 색의 조화를 만들어나갔다.

<Cyclicality> 시리즈의 다른 작품들과 같이, 말들은 보이지 않는 영혼의 움직임을 상징하며, 원의 형태로 돌고 도는 말들의 모습은 윤회의 과정을 상징한다. <Saturation of the Soul>과 같이, <마음의 계절>은 두 마리의 말이 반사되듯, 서로를 좇듯, 그러면서 끊임없이 이어지듯 서로 웅크린 채 돌고 또 돌고 있다.

말은 전통적으로는 “양”을 상징하는 동물이다. 하지만 역동적인 말의 자유로움에는 동양철학에서의 “음”을 뜻하는 것들 또한 보인다. “음”은 “혼돈”과도 같은 것이라 정의하는데, “혼돈”은 곳 고정된 틀에서 벗어나서 변화하려는 자유또한 뜻한다. 이러한 면에서 말에게서는 “음“과 ”양“ 둘다 공존한다.

<마음의 계절>에서는 두 마리의 말로 표현한 하나의 영혼이 환경으로부터 오는 ”타생 (他生: 다른 것으로부터 생함)“ 울림으로 ”자생(自生:자체에서 생함)“적 빛깔을 띄게 된다. <Saturation of the Soul>이 한 영혼의 성숙 과정을 빛깔의 조화로 표현했다면, <마음의 계절>은 그때그때 바뀌는 마음의 여러가지 모습을 빛깔로 표현해본 것이다. 지구도 시간과 함께 계절을 타며, 뜨거워지기도 하고, 그 뜨거움을 놓을 준비도 하며, 시려울 때는 안으로 파고들기도 하고, 언제 그랬냐는 듯 간질간질 따뜻해지기도 한다. 우리를 품는 지구 또한 이렇게 계절을 타는데, 왜 마음이 계절을 탈 때 우리는 마음을 탓하고 원망할까. <마음의 계절>은 이러한 마음의 형태가 그 어떤 순간에도 같지 않고, 항상 진화하고, 돌아오고, 또 변하는 작은 윤회적 패턴을 반복하고 있지 않을까하는 생각을 담은 작품들이다. 그러한 마음을 포용할 수 있다면, 그 또한 “나”의 일부가 되는 것이다. 그것이 자연스러움인 것. <마음의 계절> 그림들을 보는 이들이 그 순간 그 그림들을 통해 그들의 마음을 들여다볼 수 있는 순간이 있었으면 한다. 당신의 마음, 지금 어떤 빛깔일까?
