Soul meets physicality. Soul and body experience the physical world, formulating ego, aligning with fate. Collective actions accumulate karma, and when time is up the body returns to the soil as promised. Based on karma, the soul rebirths into a new world, a different time zone. The shape and form of one’s life is often smooth, often complex. Experiencing polar opposites light and dark, full and empty, hot and cold, the soul matures. The formality of creating is an ode to the “heart sutra”: “Form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form”. This includes the use and non-usage of paint on canvas, the contrast of white and black, the usage of gesso which is the foundation of paintings, and charcoal, the basic material for mark-making. Each time of rebirth, the soul is born into a blank slate, a new beginning. Yet its fermentation is something beyond the physical world as is its concept of materiality and time; its maturation is made of the repetition of expansion and return—of resuscitation. In the endless plane where the soul matures it endures a cycle with a spectrum so cyclical that the beginning and end loses meaning and value. The six canvases within the series illustrate six lives. These six lives borrow thought from Samsara, “the cycle of conditioned existence and suffering”, and also to the six ways or realms of reincarnation. Yet the soul’s six renderings are not necessarily six different pathways, but six different views of the same world. Through the different world views, one single world is seen and a truth is realized. Form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form itself.
