About the <Functionality> study
<Functionality> is a series that consists of five works. Each work beholds a unique process of destruction of a piece of garment (a jacket). With each piece, the method of destruction and how much of the function of the jacket of being "worn" is destructed is particularly curated.
1st jacket: A painting on the back of the garment
2nd jacket: The garment stiffened with fabric stiffener, with a painting on the back of the garment
3rd jacket: The garment collaged with receipts and mixed paper using paper mache method, with a painting on the back of the garment
4th jacket: The garment cast into a sculptural form with plaster, with paint on the external surfaces
5th jacket: the garment's armholes closed shut with plexy, and the opening of the garment attached to an iron board, with paint on the external surfaces
<Functionality> is an exploration of how the manipulation of the functionality of an object questions the object’s definition, and how the presence or absence functionality determines the value we place and relationships we build with matter.
<Functionality> became the root of eee, evolving first into <smoking zodiacs> the following winter.
About the <Borders> Polykhroma Inaugural Exhibition, Davis Square, Somerville, MA, USA
Upon display at <Borders> by Polykhroma, the works were displayed hung as jackets are with clothing hangers. Viewers were invited to interact with the work and try on the garments. A mirror was installed near the installation as a part of the participatory process.
